Romantic Language Comparison How do I Love Thee and Sonnet 116 - Literature Essay Samples
Both ââ¬ËHow Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)ââ¬â¢ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSonnet 116ââ¬â¢ explore the ideas of love and romance in the traditional form of a sonnet. Whereas Browning writes about the intense love she felt towards her husband-to-be in Sonnet 43, which was part of a series of sonnets written in secret, Shakespeare depicts what he believes the true qualities of love to be in a reflective attempt to define and understand what it is in its purest, and somewhat most idealized, form. Both Browning and Shakespeare present love in an overtly romanticized manner, employing enjambment to create flowing rhythms which suggest the boundlessness of their love, and the continual joy it brings. Shakespeare metaphorically proposes that love ââ¬Ëis an ever-fixed markââ¬â¢ which ââ¬Ëlooks on tempests, and is never shakenââ¬â¢. This use of sea imagery illustrates Shakespeareââ¬â¢s belief that true love is immortal, ââ¬Ëever-fixedââ¬â¢, and once established can never be lost. The praising tone indicates that he strongly believes love defies all ââ¬Ëimpedimentsââ¬â¢, thus insinuating that it can and will survive the most severe of obstacles, even a ââ¬Ëtempestââ¬â¢. Shakespeare perhaps intentionally draws our attention to the line ââ¬Ëo no; it is an ever-fixed markââ¬â¢ by making it only 9 syllables; the shortest of the whole sonnet. This particular variation in meter, along with the use of the exclamatory ââ¬Ëoââ¬â¢, highlights Shake speareââ¬â¢s conviction that love is eternal, which is the overriding message of ââ¬ËSonnet 116.ââ¬â¢ Browning similarly conveys her belief in everlasting love, adopting the repetition of ââ¬ËI love theeââ¬â¢ to reinforce her utter devotion to and complete infatuation with her beloved. She suggests that she loves him ââ¬Ëto the depth and breadth and height [her] soul can reachââ¬â¢, demonstrating the spiritual level of her love and how it will continue ââ¬Ëafter deathââ¬â¢. The internal rhyme of ââ¬Ëdepthââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëbreadthââ¬â¢ forges a natural rhythm, embodying how pure and preordained their relationship is, and also serving to create a sense of harmony and balance within the line, complementing the equality of their love. This idea is similarly explored in Anne Bradstreetââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËTo My Dear and Loving Husbandââ¬â¢, which declares ââ¬Ëthat when we live no more we may live ever, which emphasizes the indestructible nature of lov e. All three poets appear convinced that perfect love is imperishable and will endure ââ¬Ëeven to the edge of doom.ââ¬â¢ Furthermore, both Shakespeare and Browning utilize the sonnet form in order to further idealize and elevate their perceptions of love to higher levels. However, whilst Browningââ¬â¢s words are aptly encapsulated by a variation of the Petrarchan sonnet form, which involves an ABBA, ABBA, CD, CD, CD rhyme scheme, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s sonnet uses an ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG rhyme scheme. Browningââ¬â¢s choice causes us to focus upon the differences between the octave and the sestet, whilst Shakespeare draws our attention to the final rhyming couplet. The octave of ââ¬ËHow Do I Love Thee?ââ¬â¢ expresses the extent to which she loves her future husband, ââ¬Ëto the level of every dayââ¬â¢s most quiet needââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëby sun and candle-lightââ¬â¢, which illustrates her pure devotion to him and her loveââ¬â¢s ceaselessness. She clearly will love him by night and day and will provide for his every ââ¬Ëneedââ¬â¢. The sestet, on the other hand, draws analogies b etween the intensity of love she felt while writing the poem and the love she experienced earlier in her life, stating that she loves him with her ââ¬Ëchildhoodââ¬â¢s faithââ¬â¢ and the ââ¬Ëbreath, smiles, tears, of all [her] lifeââ¬â¢. This raises her love for him to religious levels, suggesting that she loves him just as she had loved her ââ¬Ëfaithââ¬â¢ and the ââ¬Ëlost saintsââ¬â¢ of her childhood. Moreover, the cumulative effect of ââ¬Ëbreath, smiles, tearsââ¬â¢ depicts her love as all-consuming, suggesting that she will give everything to him and remain loyal, even through difficult times. This selflessness draws parallels with Robert Burnsââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËA Red, Red Roseââ¬â¢, in which he expresses his utter devotion to his love, whom he will always be there for ââ¬Ëthoââ¬â¢ it were ten-thousand mileââ¬â¢, which emphasizes how he will do anything for her. Whilst Browning and Burns are evidently deeply in love with their respective pa rtners, Shakespeare explicitly appears in love with love itself as opposed to a person. The final rhyming couplet asserts that if all he has said about love thus far is ââ¬Ëerror and upon me provedââ¬â¢, he ââ¬Ënever writ, nor no man ever lovedââ¬â¢, reaching a conviction that love is immortal and has the ability to defy all else. The initial sense of assurance and security that these words elicit could be questioned upon further examination, however, as the alliterative ââ¬Ënââ¬â¢ sound creates a negative undertone and the half rhyme of ââ¬Ëprovedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëlovedââ¬â¢ could perhaps be representative of his desperation to believe what he is writing. The incompleteness of the rhyme could suggest that deep down he is not entirely convinced that his words are realistically true. Tucker Brooke says Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSonnet 116ââ¬â¢ is a poem ââ¬Ëwhich has about it no strangeness whatever except the strangeness of perfectionââ¬â¢[1], notably regarding the predominant use of iambic pentameter, which he often favored and which is also embraced by Browning. Both poets suggest that their love will endure and the use of iambic pentameter reinforces this theme by creating a measured certainty, reflecting their assurance in love. Browning utilizes this meter when claiming ââ¬ËI shall but love thee better after deathââ¬â¢, highlighting the importance of the belief in Christianity and the after-life in the Victorian society she lived in, which illustrates her hope that ââ¬Ëif God chooseââ¬â¢ her love will only continue to grow ââ¬Ëafter deathââ¬â¢. She seems to think that only Godââ¬â¢s power over the body and soul in death is more powerful than the love she has for her husband-to-be, but God willing her love will be eternal. Sha kespeare similarly believes that ââ¬Ëlove alters not with his brief hours and weeksââ¬â¢, depicting his confidence in the unmovable nature of genuine and perfect love, accentuated by the use of iambic pentameter which again creates a measured and certain rhythm. These references to the passage of time and loveââ¬â¢s ability to triumph it are also used by Donne in ââ¬ËThe Sun Risingââ¬â¢, in which he declares that love knows ââ¬Ëno hours, days, months, which are the rags of timeââ¬â¢. This is indicative of his belief that love is immortal and exists out of time, no matter what ââ¬Ëhour, dayââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëmonthââ¬â¢ it is. Donne is clearly exploring the philosophy of love, as a Metaphysical poet, minimizing the importance of ââ¬Ëthe rags of timeââ¬â¢ in order to understand what love truly is. This is more similar to Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSonnet 116ââ¬â¢ than Browningââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËHow Do I Love Thee?ââ¬â¢ which focuses on her feelings of being in love as opposed to what love actually is, perhaps influenced by the differing periods in which they were writing. To conclude, it is apparent that both Shakespeare and Browning utilize the sonnet form, along with a number of structural techniques, in order to aptly convey their feelings towards love and its power. Whilst Browning adheres to the sonnetââ¬â¢s traditional purpose of being a love poem about another person, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSonnet 116ââ¬â¢ strays from this in that it is about being in love with love itself. In 1959, C. W. Mills published The sociological Imagination. Sociology was new in the U.S. and few universities even had sociology departments. Sociologists discussed how to teach and explain what is intended to know sociology. Mills book is a critical point in history. The book looks into sociologys future and had a big influence on sociological masterminds of the twentieth century. Mills is trying to show how a person can develop reason based on outside information. Mills defines the sociological imagination as the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society. He enjoyed visualising things socially and how they interact and impact each other. The sociological imagination utilizes four factors to help sociologists see things from different viewpoints: biography, social structure, and history. Biography refers to the everyday struggles people face in life Mills refers to this as milieu. Social structure refers to institutions like family, work environment, political gatherings and how they are connected. When discussing the history of a person, it often has to do with biological factors and where your DNA originates from it connects the smaller picture with the bigger picture. Sociology enables an individual to comprehend their place in reality and shows them a way to control their own world. Social structures and common issues in peoples lives are rarely ever personal. These individual issues are issues experienced by a population of people in society. Numerous individual issues are social issues camouflaged by selfishness. The distinction between an individual and societal issue in an individual are the inconveniences a person encounters, and the issues a whole society encounters that could undermine its structure. A normal person may get discouraged about being jobless and acknowledges it as their own inconvenience. If there are thousands of individuals unemployed Mills argues it should then be treated as a public issue. These problems are interwoven with a large-scale of society where government policy might be included as a public issue. One example of this is divorce separations inside a society tends to be viewed as individual inconveniences of only the people involved. If individuals are getting divorced each year, than it tends to be viewed as a public issue where foundations like marriage are considered a bigger issue of society. The sociological imagination helps understand history, life, and the relations inside a society. Individuals make history and biographies are peoples life stories. History is what went on between individuals everywhere throughout the world. History is the proof of what was done, why it was done and how it turned out. Mills specified two schools in the book, the first school is the grand theory and focuses on the Harvard sociologist Talcott Parsons. He made speculations about what all humans do. Mills sees Parsons is the prime grand theory. There are two fundamental issues of this theory, the first is that it is confusing, utilizing enormous words and long entries when the thoughts are straightforward, could be explained easier and cannot explain the problems people have or how to fix them. The second school, abstracted empiricism is fixated on surveying individuals and public opinion but this surveying only works sometimes. Surveys can tell you someones opinion, but it cant tell you what is persuading it. Mills thinks this technique systematize research and stops critical thinking. As a result, transforms sociology into bureaucracy. Sociology takes on the bureaucratic ideals instead of truth.
