Japanese Animal Vocabulary Pronunciation and Characters
There are kanji characters for hippopotamus (æ ² ³Ã© ¦ ¬), giraffe (é ºâé ºÅ¸), mouse (é ¼ ), camel (é § ±Ã© § ), squirrel (æ â"é ¼ ), zebra (ç ¸Å¾Ã© ¦ ¬), rabbit (Ã¥â¦Å½) and goat (Ã¥ ± ±Ã§ ¾Å ), but they are often written in hiragana or katakana.à The counter for small animals is hikià (Ã¥Å' ¹) and for large animals is touà (é ).
