Japanese Animal Vocabulary Pronunciation and Characters

There are kanji characters for hippopotamus (æ ² ³Ã© ¦ ¬), giraffe (é ºâ€™Ã© ºÅ¸), mouse (é ¼  ), camel (é § ±Ã© § ), squirrel (æ  â€"é ¼  ), zebra (ç ¸Å¾Ã© ¦ ¬), rabbit (å…Ž) and goat (Ã¥ ± ±Ã§ ¾Å ), but they are often written in hiragana or katakana.   The counter for small animals is hiki  (Ã¥Å' ¹) and for large animals is tou  (é   ­).
